The best tips for your motorcycle trips to cold climates
Many destinations in Colombia are temperate or cold places. For example, traveling to Villa de Leyva, Bogotá, the dairy route and returning to the east in Antioquia. These are some where we face the cold on our motorcycle (there are many more!). So we must be prepared and protected against any new developments we encounter on the route. John Doe will give you the advice you need to have a safe and enjoyable adventure when traveling in cold climates.
1- Equipment for the cold
You cannot go out on your motorcycle to a cold weather destination without adequate protection for the weather and in case of a possible fall. A jacket is ideal to cover you from wind, dust and water if you face rain. At John Doe we have the Explorer jacket (for men and women), ideal for cold weather and comes with protectors in the elbow and shoulder area. The fabric allows air to not enter and you can stay warm while you ride your motorcycle.
Another option that we use is the 2-in-1 Softshell jacket . This garment repels water and has internal heating so you are always warm. Its zipper goes up to the neck, which also keeps it warm. These are some references, here you can find all our jackets.
A neck accessory is also necessary. This will allow this area to stay warm. John Doe has several references, and we are sure that you will find the one that best suits your taste.
The last two pieces of clothing you need are gloves and shoes. Make sure they are both waterproof, warm, and moisture-wicking so your extremities don't get cold while you ride.
2- Check your motorcycle
You must check that your motorcycle is in perfect condition. Tires are one of the elements that suffer the most in the cold. Due to low temperatures, they lose traction. Before leaving, check that they are okay and that they have the correct air pressure. One way to warm up your tires is to accelerate and decelerate quickly, but be aware of traction limits and road conditions.
Check that your motorcycle's brake fluids and oil are at the proper levels. Lastly, make sure your battery works. If you are not 100% sure, bring some battery starting cables with you.
3- Checks on the road
If when you are driving you notice that your reaction time is slower than normal, if you feel that your hands and legs are getting stiff, you are having trouble breathing or you are 'going away', these are signs that you are suffering from hypothermia. Stop immediately, find a place to rest and where you can be warm.
4- Safe driving
In cold climates, roads can become slippery due to snow or ice. Reduce speed and increase the distance between vehicles to have more reaction time. When braking, use both, gently and with time in advance to avoid skidding. Also, avoid sudden maneuvers and maintain a relaxed posture.
5- Hydration
Although it may seem curious, you should be hydrated during cold weather routes. You should drink only water and avoid caffeine because it dehydrates you much more, although it is difficult due to the weather since you are looking for something hot. Also do not drink alcohol if you are going to drive because it is a dangerous combination and, like caffeine, it dehydrates you faster.
Traveling by motorcycle in cold climates is an incredible experience, but it is important to be properly equipped, check that your motorcycle is in perfect condition, and take extra precautions to ensure your safety and comfort. Follow these tips and enjoy your adventure. At John Doe you find the most comfortable equipment for riding a motorcycle with the highest safety standards.
